When wet, then slippery – the police recommend to equip the car with winter tires in a timely manner

Although the thermometer bar still shows several degrees above zero, weather forecasters promise that in the coming nights in several places in Latvia the temperature may drop below zero. Such weather conditions can be especially dangerous for road users in the early morning hours, as icing or so-called black ice can form on the roads. Therefore State police (VP) urges drivers to be especially careful and to assess in good time the need to equip their vehicle with winter tires.

In the inter-season between autumn and winter, when the weather is still changing, icing can most often form on the roads in the morning – an imperceptible layer of ice that can look like wet asphalt on the road. Driving on such a road is more dangerous than in the summer season, so the VP urges drivers to be careful, observe a longer driving distance and an appropriate driving style.

At variable temperatures, particularly dangerous places can form on bridges or overpasses and in curves. In such places, it is important to pay special attention to safe driving speeds, and drivers should avoid performing sharp maneuvers that can cause slipping.

If drivers have to watch out for icing in the morning, during the day, after the autumn rain, puddles can form on the roads, as a result of which the road cracks fill with water. In such weather conditions, drivers must be very careful not to lose control of the vehicle, as the vehicle’s tires may lose traction and so-called aquaplaning may occur when entering water-filled roads. The risk increases when the driver performs rapid maneuvers, therefore, drivers should avoid sudden maneuvers – rapid braking or rapid speeding.

The VP urges drivers not to risk the safety of themselves and other road users while driving. During the changing seasons, it is very important for drivers to take care of the technical condition of their vehicle, especially the quality of the tires. As well as timely assessment of the need to equip your vehicle with winter tires.

Current statistics show that 104 traffic participants died and 3370 were injured in road traffic accidents in Latvia by 15 October this year. 99 people died in road traffic accidents in the same period last year, but 3681 persons were injured.
