JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – When is the fasting month of Ramadan 1442 Hijri or fasting 2021 will begin? Muslims will find out after there is an order by the government through the isbat session.

The Ministry of Religion will hold the meeting for determining 1 Ramadan 1442 H starting Monday (12/4/2021) this afternoon.

The Director General of Islamic Community Guidance, Kamaruddin Amin, conveyed certainty about the implementation of the isbat session today in an official statement received Kompas.com, Saturday (10/4/2021).

Meanwhile, the Director of Islamic Affairs Agus Salim said the isbat session would be held in three stages, starting at 16.45 WIB.

The following are the three stages of the implementation of the isbat trial for the determination of 1 Ramadhan 1442 H:

• First, at 16.45 WIB, it will begin with the explanation of the position of the early moon moon for Ramadhaan 1442 H by members of the Ministry of Religion’s Hijri Calendar Unification Team. This session will be broadcast live on television
• Secondly, after the Maghrib prayers, an early Ramadan isbat session will be held. This stage is held in private.
• Third, there will be a press conference for the delivery of the results of the isbat session by the Minister of Religion. The submission of the decision will be broadcast on TVRI and Ministry of Religion social media.

The implementation of the isbat session will involve the Ministry of Religious Affairs’ Hijriyah Calendar Unification Team, ambassadors from friendly countries, representatives of mass organizations, LAPAN, BMKG, and other invitations.

In addition, there will also be representatives of Islamic organizations such as NU, Muhammadiyah, Persis, and Al Washliyah.

The Ministry of Religion said that a number of hilal monitors will be deployed at 86 locations from 34 provinces in Indonesia.

The method of determining the beginning of Ramadan

As previously reported, there are two methods to determine the start of Ramadan. The two methods are reckoning and rukyat.

What is rukyat? Rukyatul hilal is the activity of observing the visibility of the hilal (crescent moon) at sunset towards the beginning of the month on the Hijri calendar.

Together with mass organizations and experts, the Ministry of Religion first carried out calculations about the height of the new moon.

This is done to avoid the ‘wrong look’.

If the height of the hilal is below 2 or 4 degrees, then it is possible that the object seen is not the moon, but stars, ship lights, or other objects.

Please note, the hilal can be seen with a minimum height of 2 degrees, 3 degrees elongation (distance from the angle of the sun to the moon), and a minimum age of 8 hours during ijtima.

If the height is below that, it means that it is not rukyat yet.

Then, the second method is reckoning. What is reckoning? Hisab is a mathematical and astronomical calculation to determine the position of the moon in determining the start of the month on the Hijri calendar.

There are several references or books used in Indonesia and have used contemporary methods.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Religion used the ephemeris reckoning rukyat data. Although there are several methods of reckoning rukyat, usually the results are the same.

These two methods are a way to determine the beginning of the month, it cannot be denied each other because they all support each other.
