“Good for the service” or with your head down
Classroom associations have always been “training belts” for local activities, as in Yssingeaux during the carnival parade and in all the villages for patronal feasts. The vogues were the occasion of the famous “goose shoots”.
the conscripts rode draft horses bareback in an attempt, at full gallop and with the help of a sword, to cut the neck of a bird tied to a rope high above the road! Over time, the way of doing things did not fail to move good souls and, there are already thirty years, the animal was killed before!
In 1906, the program of the Yssingelaise votive festival highlighted the “goose shooting of the classiers of the countryside, route de Saint-Jeures” then again “a horse race route de Retournac” which was not yet organized. ‘avenue Clemenceau… In the sub-prefecture, the last goose shootings took place in the 1990s along the rue Traversière.
Classes often held balls. At least once a year, they shared the double tasting and feasted for New Year’s Eve or some other occasion. At the time of the three days and after the review board, the festivities sometimes turned to harsh libations and overflows apt to testify to a quality of male “good for the service”! The Reformed left with their heads bowed …
