At the end of last week, the “New York Times” published an op-ed by one of its star columnists, the Nobel laureate in economics Paul Krugman, which must have surprised some of its readers. He paints a very flattering portrait of France, of its societal and economic choices, with a strong conviction: France, he writes, is the “great star among all the developed countries” of the pandemic period we are living through.

We must quote the economist at length, and first of all on the economic management of the Covid-19 virus for two years. “France?, he begins. For as long as I can remember, American media coverage of the French economy has been relentlessly negative. However, “France not only managed to avoid a massive drop in employment, but also exceeded its pre-pandemic level”.
