Actually, the Messner couple did everything right so that they no longer have to worry in old age. For years, the 80-year-old Karl Meßner worked as a technician, his wife worked as an educator in a kindergarten. The money was enough for a good life, for vacations and also for: a house. In the 1990s they bought a semi-detached house with a large plot of land in the chic Karolinenhof district of Berlin, a district right on the banks of the Dahme, a little over half an hour’s drive from Alexanderplatz. A perfect location to enjoy the autumn of life. But the Messners did not feel the financial freedom in old age – despite the property being paid off.
