Among the victims are three pedestrians and two cyclists, but one person died in a traffic accident in Latgale.
The representative of the State Fire and Rescue Service Agrita Vītols informed the agency LETA that yesterday at 18.47 the firefighters received a call to Rēzekne region, where, according to the initial information, a road traffic accident had occurred. Arriving at the scene, firefighters found that the car had slipped into the water.
During an underwater search, divers found a car about 30 meters from shore, four meters deep, and contained one person who was taken ashore by rescuers and killed by ambulance medics. Firefighters rescued the car ashore using winches and handed it over to the State Police.
In total, 103 road traffic accidents were registered in the country during the day, of which 16 were with victims.
During the day, 49 road traffic accidents occurred in the Riga region, in Zemgale – 11, in Kurzeme – 19, in Vidzeme – 14, but in Latgale 10 accidents were registered, according to the data compiled by the VP.
