Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A virtual meeting between the Minister of Defense of Australia Linda Reynolds and the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia Lieutenant General TNI (Purn) Prabowo Subianto Djojohadikusumo, Friday (6/11/2020), there is still a story.
The meeting published by Linda’s official Twitter account, @LindaReynoldswa, drew criticism from a number of circles. They questioned what benefit Linda would get from the rehearsal.
According to Linda, the meeting discussed the deepening of defense cooperation between the two countries. He said the partnership between Australia and Indonesia helps support regional security and resilience.
The chairman and founder of the Indonesia Institute Ross B Taylor considered that pragmatic nuance was evident in describing the meeting.
“And in this situation, this is a reasonable position, despite the concerns of human rights groups,” Ross said via his Twitter account @indorosstaylor as quoted on Sunday (8/11/2020).
He also added that Indonesia’s position is now more crucial for Australia. Especially in the midst of uncertainty in relations with China.
Meanwhile, the Timor Sea Justice Forum reminded Prabowo as a figure who was responsible for a series of violence while serving in Timor Leste in the period 1976, 1978 and 1983-1984.
“How warm and productive can you get (from the meeting) ?,” asked the Timor Sea Justice Forum on their official Twitter account @TSJForum.
The same thing was conveyed by a warganet @ scotiaforever5. According to them, Prabowo was responsible for the violence that occurred while on duty, not only in Timor Leste, but also in Jakarta and Papua.
“You and the government should be ashamed for turning a blind eye to the genocide committed against Papuans by the Indonesian military led by the minister of defense,” wrote @ scotiaforever5.
