Bleeding gums can occur after very aggressive tooth brushing. But they can also be a sign of a more serious health problem.
Gingivitis, the inflammation of the gums caused by a bacterium, manifests itself, among other things, with bleeding; the same explanation applies to periodontitis (degenerated gingivitis attacking the supporting structures of the tooth) and mouth ulcers.
Bleeding gums are also one of the earliest symptoms of oral cancer. Finally, we must know that pregnancy can sensitize the gums and cause bleeding, especially starting from the third month of pregnancy.
Some people are more prone to bleeding gums. These are smokers, diabetics, people who use oral contraceptives, antidepressants or anticoagulants. Stress and age are also factors that need to be taken into consideration in this matter.
Bleeding gums and pain
If the bleeding is punctual and caused by a defective toothbrush (too hard, incorrect use of dental floss or interdental brushes), correcting your oral hygiene habits is sufficient.
If, on the other hand, the bleeding is recurrent and / or accompanied by other symptoms (breathlessness, abnormal coloration or inflammation of the gums, pain …), it is very important to consult the dentist as soon as possible. Likewise, if the bleeding is caused by an inadequate brace, it is mandatory to consult the orthodontist to correct the shape of the brace.
Overnight
Bleeding gums at night are often caused by too vigorous brushing before bedtime. If the bleeding recurs, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
If this symptom is not accompanied by others, it may be sufficient to correct the way you brush your teeth: less intensely and with a suitable toothbrush.
Acute or relapsing
Bleeding gums can be acute or recurrent. We speak of acute bleeding when it is punctual following a very strong brushing or chewing of a food that is too hot or spicy. In this case, the bleeding is short-lived and stops spontaneously.
Recurrent bleeding, also called “chronic bleeding gums,” is of more concern and requires a doctor’s consultation. It is usually caused by inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) which, if not treated properly, can develop into periodontitis, a disease that leads to tooth loss.
treatments
To stop acute bleeding, an antiseptic mouthwash should suffice. In case of chronic bleeding, the cause should be determined. If it is gingivitis or periodontitis, the dentist will determine the treatment to stop the bleeding.
