The possibility of Italian Giorgio Chiellini’s move to Real Madrid has been raised several times in the past and he himself spoke about it during an interview with MARCA on Saturday. “I was close to Real Madrid in 2010, a long time ago, but for Mourinho,” said Chiellini, now at Los Angeles FC. “I didn’t really know [pourquoi c’est tombé à l’eau] because I was young, but in the end the club couldn’t find an agreement. But, I think I was lucky to spend my whole career at Juventus because I made history with Juve. But, for sure, Real Madrid are still a fantastic team.”
Why didn’t Chiellini sign for Real Madrid?
In his book, Chiellini revealed a bit more about how close he was to moving to Spain to join Real Madrid at the peak of his career, aged 25. “In 2010 I could have signed for Real Madrid, and in 2011 for Manchester City,” he wrote in his autobiography. “In the case of Real Madrid, my agent spoke to a Real Madrid representative, I was very close to going. But [José] Mourinho had just arrived and he demanded at all costs to sign his compatriot Ricardo Carvalho, so Juventus were happy to keep me.”
