When it snows in the desert, an unusual winter fairy tale is created

Taklamakan is the largest desert in China. It is located in the west of the country in the Tarim Basin in the Xinjiang province on the territory of the Uyghur Autonomous Region. Snow does occasionally occur there, but in negligible amounts. The number of people who attacked there this January is therefore quite extreme.

The footage was taken using a drone on January 14 near the city of Aral and shows a collection that could be the envy of many a European winter resort this year.

According to experts, this is one of the extreme weather fluctuations that are related to global warming and will become more and more frequent. “The frequency of local precipitation in the southern part of the basin is already much higher than before, and we continue to observe an increasing trend,” worries climate expert Chen Jing.

And he adds that in the years 1991-2020 it snowed on average 5.7 millimeters per year in the entire Tarim basin, while for the entire period 1981-2010 it was only 5.1 millimeters.
