Almost every day on the news you hear about Wall Street, that little street in Lower Manhattan that houses the New York Stock Exchange, the New York Stock Exchange. Wall Street is also featured in several films, including the essentials Wall Street, with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen, and the Wolf of Wall Street, with Leonardo Dicaprio.
Since the attacks of September 11, 2001, the New York Stock Exchange is no longer open to the public and you will no longer be able to see the famous “trading floor”, where billions of shares are traded every day … But Wall Street deserves a great detour, provided you come at the right time.
The Financial District empties after 4 p.m.
New York’s financial district only comes alive on weekdays. So avoid visiting this area on weekends because, apart from a few tourists who wander, you will not see a New Yorker on the horizon …
To take advantage of the peak activity, follow the hours of the New York Stock Exchange, which opens every day of the week from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. After 4 p.m., the neighborhood empties and it loses all interest.
I advise you to aim more particularly for lunchtime, between noon and 2 p.m. You will see traders come out of the New York Stock Exchange building, with their traditional vests in the colors of their brokerage firm. You will also see the queues of suits and ties in front of the mobile restaurant trailers. A truly typical atmosphere that places you at the heart of global finance!
