Floods, storms, vandalism: Even a grave is not fully protected from damage or theft. Survivors who want to protect themselves from the financial consequences of such a scenario have the option of taking out so-called gravesite insurance. If damage occurs, this will be covered as part of the insured service.
How much such a policy costs depends on the sum insured that the insured has agreed with their provider. For example, the annual premium can be around 30 euros for an insured sum of 1,000 euros, and around 70 euros for an insured sum of 3,000 euros – depending on the insurer.
According to Hermann Rudolph from the Federal Association of German Stonemasons, such insurance is only worthwhile for really complex and expensive gravestones. Consumer advocates also regularly recommend that risks that do not threaten your existence should only be insured if all risks that threaten your existence have already been covered – for example through occupational disability and personal liability insurance.
