Freiburg / Berlin. Lethargy, less sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, conspicuously smooth skin and finally diminishing muscle mass and increasing weight: If men notice these symptoms themselves, it may be worth checking the hormone level. Because they may have too little testosterone in their blood, explains urologist Christian Leiber in the magazine “Neue Apotheken Illustrierte” (January 1, 2020 edition).
The shortage is not uncommon: According to the expert, 10 to 15 percent of men have complaints that are caused by it. A replacement therapy can help, either in the form of a gel applied daily or with a syringe administered every few weeks.
Just taking hormones is of little use
However, the therapy is of little use if those affected do not change their lifestyle at the same time. In concrete terms, that means losing weight and moving more. Because overweight, problems with blood pressure and lack of exercise are risk factors for testosterone deficiency. And vice versa, the risk of the disease can be significantly reduced through healthy eating and exercise. (Dpa / tmn)
