New Delhi –
Ganges River in India was again horrified by the appearance of hundreds of floating corpses. It is alleged that the bodies were deliberately released in the river due to the fullness of the crematorium.
The appearance of hundreds of corpses in India occurs due to seasonal flooding. The flood eroded shallow graves and exposed bodies.
Knowing this, the act of cremation was carried out. In the last three weeks, nearly 150 bodies have been cremated and it is estimated that there are still 500-600 bodies in the Ganges River.
“We are not exhuming bodies but only bodies floating due to rising water levels that are being cremated,” said an official in the northern city of Allahabad, Neeraj Kumar Singh, as reported by AFP on Sunday (27/6/2021).
“The area is spread over a kilometer (half a mile) and we estimate there are around 500-600 bodies buried,” Singh said.
Believed to be COVID-19 Victims
Most of the bodies found are believed to have been victims of COVID-19 in April and May, when India was hit by a spike in cases or because families couldn’t afford firewood for traditional Hindu cremations and the bodies were buried in the Ganges River.
Suspicions arose after the bodies in the Ganges were found. The total death toll in India since the pandemic is thought to be more than a million, many times the official figure of nearly 400,000.
