When Europol worries about “Incels”, far-right terrorism and anti-feminists

Inequalitarianism by “nature”

One of the things to note is that there is not a single far-right ideology, they are very motley movements with different demands. But, according to Benjamin Biard, researcher at CRISP, one of the common characteristics is “an unequal vision by nature” of the society. Sometimes considering the superiority of the race, for example, or the superiority of men.

However, not all right-wing extremists are anti-feminists. However, these ideologies “are united in the rejection of diversity and the rights of minorities”, Europol point.

The woman for the race

In reality, anti-feminism seems to be a component within certain far-right ideologies, whether violent or not. But it is a component that can be unifying. Anti-feminism in far-right ideologies would thus oppose “to feminism which would promote a globalized, multicultural and mixed race society whose victim would be the white race in danger, ‘in serious and imminent danger”, analyzes Michaël Dantinne, professor of criminology at the University of Liège.

Thus, extremist anti-feminism fits into the “great replacement theories”. “Feminism was allegedly invented to distract women from their ‘natural’ role as mothers, and is therefore blamed for the fall in birth rates in western European countries, which ultimately allowed immigration”, underlines the Europol report.

And to add, “sexual frustration and misogyny were clearly explained by the perpetrators of the attacks Christchurch (New Zealand) and Halle (Germany), a 2019 and a 2020 “.

The misogynistic component in the authors of attacks imbued with far-right ideologies is not new. In his manifesto, Norwegian terrorist Anders Breivik indicated: “sometimes you have to kill women, even if they can be very attractive”.

Why give “TELEFONLAR”?

The incels are the “involuntary singles”, who consider themselves to be unfairly rejected by the fairer sex. Women who have been given a little too many rights and who have lost sight of their “primary role”. “These ideas help to rationalize sexual frustration”, Europol analysis. Therefore, because of a systematic rejection, “the object of desire becomes the object of hate “, points Mickaël Dantinne.

The emblematic figure of this movement is Elliot Rodgers who killed six people in California before killing himself at the age of 22. This attack is considered to be the first mass killing attributable to the ideology of the Incels.

“Anti-feminism can be a vector of violent action but not necessarily on its own”, analyzes the criminologist. It is a “cocktail of several theories which can be dangerous”, details the criminologist.

But it is true that “bridges” exist between with far-right ideologies and the Incels. Europol notes in its report that “the misogynist community, mainly composed of young men, meet on the web, in spaces similar to those frequented by white supremacists and they blame feminists, for their inability to find a sexual partner”.

It is very difficult to analyze the extent of this phenomenon. Nevertheless, violent far-right movements, as well as the incels seem to be in the crosshairs of the security services. Or at least under observation. Michaël Dantinne recalls, however, that “not all incels are violent, it is moreover the affair of an isolated minority”.
