  • Every October 14, World Organ and Tissue Donation Day is celebrated, a date that aims to highlight the importance of an act as important as donation. The intention of this event is to encourage as many people as possible to declare themselves as donors, a fact that can improve and even save the lives of many people.

In some diseases, the only possible solution is transplantation, such as acute or chronic diseases for which the corresponding treatment has not generated a response. Therefore, it is important that there are donors who, altruistically, contribute to improving the lives of patients.

There are two types of donations, the tacit and the express. In the first, there is a lack of denial or a document that specifically states that this person refuses to be a donor after death, although the family can always refuse. Regarding the second, the person has signed an express document in which he is recognized as a donor and that, after his death, his body would be donated to science and his organs would be transplanted to those who need them.

In Castilla-La Mancha there is an organ donation service, the Autonomous Transplant Unit, which works in coordination with SESCAM professionals. The # CLMsídona information campaign has reached a large number of people, who have received the appropriate information to become donors.

It is important to know that age is not a limiting factor when it comes to becoming a donor in Spain, so anyone can be. Our country is the world leader in organ donation, a leadership that it maintained during 2020 despite the pandemic. To be able to register as a donor in Castilla-La Mancha it is necessary to fill in this form.

On this important day, it would be helpful to learn about the donation and transplantation process, as well as share this information with the people around us, because becoming a donor can save lives, and because anyone could find themselves in the situation of needing a transplant.
