When Does Winter Time Start in 2023? Exploring the Changes in Daylight Hours and Sunset Times

Despite the atypical temperatures we are enjoying during these weeks, summer has already come to an end, regardless of what the thermometers say. Like every year, it’s time to say goodbye to the long summer days, to set our clocks again. From what day does the so-called “winter time” begin to operate?

Why do we change the time?

This initiative to change the time, which is also carried out with the arrival of spring in March, was promoted by the European Union in 2001. Since then, these two changes have been made each year so that the natural day coincides with daylight hours, thus facilitating energy savings. However, last year 2018 the suitability of this system was questioned by the Union itself, as the data indicated that 64% of Europeans preferred not to operate with this schedule.

However, the BOE reflects the dates of all time changes planned until 2026. It should be noted that Spain’s time zone does not coincide with its geographical position – that is why we have one more hour than our Portuguese neighbors – since Franco moved the clocks forward Spanish in the 40s to coincide with the time of other European countries such as France or Germany.

When does winter time start in 2023?

As indicated in the Official State Gazette, winter time will be implemented in the early hours of the last Sunday in October: that is, next Sunday, October 29 at 3:00 in the morning this time will come into force. On the 29th, at 3:00 it will be 2:00, so sunrise will be an hour earlier, and the sun will also set an hour earlier.

The BOE also indicates that on March 26, summer time will begin: then, at 2:00 in the morning it will be 3:00.

What time will it dawn and dusk?

The change in winter time, in addition to the position of the sun at this time of year, means that we will have fewer hours of daylight, and that it will dawn and dusk earlier. The time of sunrise and sunset may vary slightly depending on the geographical location.

Madrid

If the Sun normally bathes Puerta del Sol from 8:33 a.m. in October, with winter time it will dawn from 7:40 a.m. The sunset is coming earlier, and night is expected to fall in Madrid between 6:15 p.m. and 6:20 p.m.

Barcelona

In recent weeks, Barcelonans enjoy the sun between 08:11 and 19:02. However, starting next day the 29th it will dawn in the city at 07:15 and it will begin to get dark at approximately 17:50.

Sevilla

With the summer schedule, it dawns in the capital of Seville around 08:38 in the morning, although starting on the 29th, Sevillians will enjoy the sun from 7:45. However, it will start to get dark at 6:30 p.m., an hour earlier than in the hot summer.

Valencia

In Valencia, the time change will mean that early risers from Valencia will enjoy the sun earlier: it will dawn around 7:25 a.m. and set at 6:04 p.m.

Bilbao

This October, it has been dawning in Bilbao around 8:34 a.m., and dusk around 7:19 p.m. Starting on the 29th, the Bilbao sun will rise at 7:42 a.m. and set at 6:08 p.m.

A Coruña

At the beginning of autumn, dawn is breaking in A Coruña at 08:56 hours, and night has been arriving around 19:41. However, in the second half of autumn it will dawn in A Coruña around 8:04 a.m. and the sun will set at 6:29 p.m.
