When China and India restrict access to TikTok

Ignatius – The TikTok moment you escaped

The United States is discussing a possible limitation of access to TikTok, accused of making people – and in particular children and adolescents – dumber and less capable of attention, which avoids asking the same questions for all other similar social apps, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook etc. who have the merit of being very Western and very American.

The independent Breton media Breizh Info notes:

“In India, TikTok has been banned since June 2020 (along with 59 other Chinese apps). According to the Indian Ministry of Information Technology, these applications “engage in activities (…) detrimental to the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, the security of the state and public order”. Same thing in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt and Indonesia.

In China, access to Douyin, the local TikTok, is limited to forty minutes a day for children under 14. In order to preserve the quality and sleep time of the latter, use is prohibited between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. Remember that the Chinese government, worried about children viewing screens, had already restricted video game time for those under 18. three hours a week, concentrated on weekends in August 2021

If the aforementioned countries do not shine by their respect for freedom of expression, and if it is nothing more or less than censorship, we are entitled to wonder what are the effects of the consultation of these platforms on the young people and children knowing that the average time spent on TikTok is 78 minutes per day. And above all, we are entitled to wonder why a State such as ours, which constantly interferes in the private lives of its citizens, does not take any measures to regulate the influence of social networks. Don’t smoke, don’t drink alcohol, eat five fruits and vegetables a day, confine granny to the kitchen for the Yule log etc… but feel free to become totally stupid!«

An application that multiplies thoughts of suicide and self-use

“TikTok’s extremely aggressive and efficient algorithms, which focus on the user’s current interests, generate a whirlwind of similar images and information. Thus, if he has harmful thoughts, he will be sucked into a vortex of negative videos and images, the logic of addiction and assumed dependence of the application will feed and increase these dark thoughts tenfold. These are the results of a extensive investigation conducted by the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a non-profit network monitoring organization. His findings are staggering: accounts of vulnerable profiles were literally bombarded (up to 12 times more than other profiles) as follows: every 39 seconds, videos discussing mental health and perfect bodies, every 2.5 minutes, content about suicide and every 8 minutes, content about eating disorders. And these are not warnings. Videos promoting self-harm, suicide or anorexia have been viewed billions of times..

A whirlwind of dark ideas that push the culture of death, isn’t this an application that must be banished from any family that wants to be Catholic ?
