Previously, the President has indicated that he sees several shortcomings in the budget. Asked whether they had been amended in the adopted budget, the President replied that in part.
Levits pointed out that he must sign the draft budget laws within three days, because the Saeima pushed the law on next year’s budget with granted urgency, therefore he has no possibility to return it. The president said he would announce the budget, but would also add his detailed comment on what he thought about the budget process and the laws in the budget package.
The first person of the state also emphasized that historically this is the largest budget, because the state has never had such large expenditures. He also praised that in 2021 the minimum wage will increase significantly, as well as the salaries of teachers and doctors, minimum benefits and pensions will increase.
Asked if these pros outweighed the cons, Levits explained that the budget can never be fully satisfied, adding that there are some reform laws related to tax changes and the budget that may still need to be reviewed.
As reported, on December 2, the Saeima adopted the budget for 2021 in the final reading, envisaging total expenditures in the amount of 10.758 billion euros, but revenues in the amount of 9.579 billion euros. 63 members voted in favor of the budget, while 32 politicians voted against it.
