History
Wheeling, W. Va. – It was a beautiful day for football at Bishop Schmitt Field as the Wheeling University Football team (4-2, 3-2) welcomed back friends, family, and alumni for Homecoming & Family Weekend. It was a record setting day for the Cardinals offense as they set the single match scoring record defeating West Virginia Wesleyan 58-3. The Cardinals scored eight touchdowns on the day as they gave their fans something to cheer about.
The offense started early on as in the first drive of the game as the Cardinals drove 55 yards on eight plays before Landon Lutz rushed his way in for a three-yard touchdown as the Cardinals took a 7-0 lead. West Virginia Wesleyan responded on the next drive as they kicked through a 44-yard field goal to make it a 7-3 game. The defense would hold strong as the first half came to a close, with the 7-3 score holding into the second quarter. The Cardinals defense would stiffen throughout the game, not allowing the Bobcats on the board the rest of the night. West Virginia Wesleyan was held to just 238 yards of total offense, the lowest total of the season as they stepped up on a big way
In the second quarter, the Cardinals forced a Bobcats punt, and the Cardinals offense got going again. After driving to the Bobcat’s 44-yard line, quarterback Landon Lutz did the rest as he hit Jermawn Ford on a 44-yard crossing route to give the Cardinals a 14-3 lead. It would be the first of three touchdowns in the quarter for the Cardinals as they were right back at it on their second drive. They took the ball to their own 49-yard line before Tre’Ron Fullerton broke free. He scampered 51 yards to the endzone and, with 6:30 to play it was a 21-3 Cardinals lead.
They put together one more scoring drive before the half, a nine-play drive all the way to the Bobcat’s one-yard line. Malachi Watkins would get his big day started, punching the ball in from once yard out and the Cardinals would go ahead 28-3.
The 28 first half points were the most scored by the Cardinals this season as they looked to keep it going in the second half. They did just that as on the first drive of the second half, Lutz threw multiple touchdowns for the second game in a row. He connected with Jermaine Earl on a 33-yard touchdown strike and the Cardinals were up 35-3. The third quarter would be the highest scoring quarter for the Cardinals, as they put up 23 points, including three touchdowns and a safety. Their safety came on the next possession as a Cardinal fumble had West Virginia Wesleyan backed up deep in their own territory the Cardinals forced a punt and Ford got in for the block that sent the ball out the back of the end zone to put the Cardinals up 37-3.
The Cardinals received the ensuing kick and proceeded to go down the field as Watkins got in for his second touchdown of the day. This one was from eight yards out as the Cardinals extended their lead to 44-3. After another defensive stop by the Cardinals, it would take one play to get down the field as Jamir Dismukes broke out of the Wildcat for a 61-yaed scamper and Wheeling was ahead 51-6. That would be the score at the end of the third quarter and the Cardinals needed just five more points to break their single-game scoring record. They did that on the first drive of the fourth quarter. It was another bomb to the end zone as Dismukes completed the longest touchdown pass of his career as he threw a 51-yard pass to Darnell Carey-Thompson to bring the game to it’s final score of 58-3.
For the second time this season, the Cardinals broke the single-game rushing record with 281 yards on the ground. Leading the way was Jamir Dismukes, running for 75 yards on two carries while Tre’Ron Fullerton picked up 72 yards rushing on four carries. Landon Lutz had another big game in offense, throwing for two touchdowns for the second consecutive week. He finished 8-17, throwing for 133 yards and two touchdowns, as well as one interception. His top target was Darnell Carey-Thompson, who pulled in two catches for 63 yards and a touchdown, while Jermawn Ford and Jermaine Earl each had 50+ receiving yards and a touchdown. The defense was led by Dalton Hoover, who led the way with nine tackles and 1.0 tackles for loss.
The Wheeling University Football team returns to action on Saturday, October 14th, when they travel to Glenville State.
