WhatsApp’s New Update: Username Feature and Interoperability with Other Apps

The WhatsApp messaging service will change forever. In the short term, the new software update will allow the use of usernames, something that already happens in competing applications, such as Telegram, making it no longer necessary to share the associated cell phone number. But the big change is something else.

Another new feature announced for Meta’s messaging service, the company that owns Instagram and Facebook, is the possibility of sending and receiving messages from other applications, such as Telegram. This new functionality will initially only work for messages, images, videos, audios and files. Only then will it be applied to group calls and conversations.

The North American magazine Wired quotes Dick Brouwer, engineering director at WhatsApp, who highlights that a fundamental requirement is that users choose to use this new feature of the application. “I can choose whether or not I want to participate in the fact that I am open to exchanging messages with third parties,” explains Brouwer. “This is important because it can be a huge source of spam and scams.”

If you choose to activate this feature, you will see messages from other applications in a separate section that will appear at the top of your inbox, the person responsible explained to Wired. “We think the best way to offer this approach is through a solution that builds on WhatsApp’s existing client-server architecture,” says Brouwer.

The implementation of a third blue visa is one of the new features expected soon, although there is still no known date for its arrival. Inserting this icon will indicate that the recipient of a message has taken a screenshot.
