After working for a long time to support multiple devices for its messaging platform, WhatsApp finally started rolling it out to all users late last year. Although users can now link multiple desktop or laptop devices to their WhatsApp accounts to use the platform independently on their PCs, the feature does not yet allow them to link a secondary mobile or tablet device. That could change soon, however, as the meta-owned giant has started hinting at this ability.
WhatsApp Multi-Device will soon support secondary mobile devices
According to a recent report by the reputable WhatsApp beta tracker WABetaInfoWhatsApp might soon you can link your secondary smartphone or tablet to your account. The tipster spotted a preview of the feature in the latest WhatsApp beta version 2.22.10.13.
The report shows the feature’s interface and the company has already developed a new one “Register Device as Companion” section in the app. It is worth mentioning that WhatsApp already confirmed last year that it would expand multi-device support for its platform. You can see the preview attached below on the right.
Once the feature goes live, users will be able to link secondary smartphones and tablets to their existing WhatsApp accounts. This is how they will be can use the messaging service on multiple mobile devices with the same account independently without the need for the primary device to be constantly connected to the internet. The secondary devices linked to a WhatsApp account are called “companion devices” and users must scan the QR code on their primary device to link them.
Now you should know that the interface is currently incomplete as the instructions below state that users must point their secondary device at a QR code to link it. However, the QR code that is supposed to appear in the middle of the screen is currently missing. Therefore, we can expect the company to make some UI changes before finally rolling out the feature to users.
