WhatsApp will end support for older smartphones from November 1st. We’ll tell you which devices you have to be careful with.

Whatsapp will no longer run on these phones from November

Even if many changes may not be directly visible: The Whatsapp messenger service is regularly developed and therefore support for older smartphones ends every year. You will then no longer be able to use the messaging service on these devices, or only to a very limited extent. Updates are then no longer available for the affected devices. Whatsapp normally puts support for older smartphone models at the turn of the year. This will happen earlier in 2021. As reported by “t-online.de” among others, users of some older iPhones or Android cell phones will be left behind as early as November 1st.

Market share of the affected devices is well below one percent

From then on, only smartphones with the Android 4.1 or KaiOS 2.5.1 or newer operating systems will be supported. iPhones need at least the operating system iOS 10 or newer. This means that very old devices in particular are eliminated, for example the popular iPhone 4s, which was presented in October 2011, or the Samsung Galaxy S, which came onto the market in 2010. According to “Bild”, the market share of the affected devices with older operating system versions is well below one percent.

WhatsApp: New function for emoji reaction

If WhatsApp still causes problems for you in November, you should look for updates in the settings instead of throwing your smartphone away. For example, if you have an iPhone 5 and newer or a Samsung Galaxy S2 or S3, you can still update to iOS 10 or Android 4.1.2.
