‘WhatsApp Web will also work without a connected telephone’

Until now, WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp Desktop have always been an extension of the smartphone version of WhatsApp. Messages are always sent over the phone, always requiring a connection to that phone. That is no longer necessary with a new beta version of WhatsApp, reports WABetaInfo.

That version reports that WhatsApp can be used on four devices simultaneously, without an active connection with the phone app. Testing is not yet possible, because the function in question is not yet active. It is therefore unclear exactly how the function works.

Encrypted

WhatsApp uses so-called end-to-end encryption. Messages are then encrypted by the sender and can only be opened again by the recipient. WhatsApp’s smartphone app is currently the only one that can do that. WhatsApp may soon expand that capability to WhatsApp Web and Desktop.

WhatsApp also says it will offer a publicly accessible beta test of the new features. Then everyone could test whether WhatsApp Web works properly without a connected smartphone. It is not yet known when that test would take place, and when the new function will be available to everyone.
