It is not new that through Whatsapp, the most popular mobile messaging application, more and more Cybercrime. However, and despite numerous warnings from the authorities, it is a type of crime that persists despite the numerous campaigns carried out to make citizens aware of the dangers to which they are exposed. And it is that cybercriminals, as a general rule, try to capture the attention of users by making them believe that the information sent to them is true when, in fact, this is not the case and their only objective is to steal your personal data.
This same week the Civil Guard He warned on his social networks together with the Internet Security Office (OSI) the population from the danger of a message that is reaching a large number of people on their mobile phones in recent days.
The fake 130th anniversary of Coca-Cola
In the message, criminals pose as Coke making the victim believe that, on the occasion of its 130th anniversary, the company is giving gifts to celebrate it. And in reality, what they are trying to do is direct the user to a web page that offers counterfeit cards worth 500 euros at Shell gas stations to get hold of their private data and thus subscribe them to a service that costs 43.50 euros every 14 days.
But how does this scam work? As the OSI explains, “on the fraudulent website we are told that by responding to a survey we can win a mini fridge”. Once the questions have been answered, the affected person must choose a gift box from those shown and then have to send that message to 20 different people, in addition to filling out a form with their personal data.
Once the above is done, we will access a new page where they tell us that “we can buy a card worth €500 for gas and fuel for 2 euros”, highlights the OSI, although at first we were told that we could get a mini fridge. Even so, this type of deception can be avoided since, as the platform indicates, “if we look at the url, we will see that it is not the official domain of Coca-Cola”.
The WhatsApp update that directly affects your profile picture and who can see it
Even so, and fortunately, not everything that happens in the messaging application is bad. And it is that WhatsApp is constantly updating and just a few weeks ago it allowed its millions of users to be able to choose within the privacy options, who can see their profile picture, in addition to their last connection time, their status and the information of your description.
