The popular messenger service WhatsApp is to get new functions. WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart and Mark Zuckerberg reveal this to the blog “WABetaInfo”.

Munich – WhatsApp * is one of the most popular messenger services worldwide. It is therefore hardly surprising that reports about new functions are making waves. This time Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart announce the updates in exchange with the blog WABetaInfo. Zuckerberg gives hope for three innovations that will probably be implemented “soon”.

WhatsApp: Three new functions are to be introduced – including the “View Once” renewal

Like Mark Zuckerberg in a WhatsApp chat interview with WABetaInfo on June 3, three updates for the messenger service should come. On the one hand, WhatsApp users should be able to send messages that are automatically deleted after a short time. This innovation is reminiscent of the Snapchat service, which has been offering this function for some time. Photos and messages can only be seen once after opening.

The “View Once” renewal is intended to ensure that private content disappears more quickly. Screenshots of the content should still be possible. The control over self-deleting messages is also to be optimized: While in the current version the messages have to be selected individually, deletion can soon be set as the standard option for all messages.

WhatsApp: Messenger service can soon be used on multiple devices at the same time

Had to for another innovation Whatsapp mastering a “major technical difficulty”, as Zuckerberg told us in an interview WABetaInfo admits. It should soon be possible to use the messenger service on several devices at the same time. A similar function is already possible today with WhatsApp Web, but the update goes beyond that. In the future, a WhatsApp account should be able to be used on more than one cell phone. You can use the messenger service even without a SIM card or smartphone connection. As WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart reveals in an interview, the “multi-device” update should be available to users in the beta version within the next two months.

WhatsApp has recently been criticized for its new privacy policy

In January WhatsApp published its new privacy policy – and received massive criticism for it. The company announced that it would share data from WhatsApp users with Facebook * and other group subsidiaries. Users in the EU are not affected – the European data protection regulation prohibits this procedure. Nevertheless, the popularity of WhatsApp competitors such as Threema and Signal increased. “We are barely able to answer the inquiries,” said co-founder and Threema CEO Martin Blatter dem Handelsblatt on February 1, 2021. With the new functions, WhatsApp will also try to win back churned users. (jjf)
