New archive function reaches users
The new prominent placement of the “archived chats” is likely to be related to a further change in the archive function. So far, WhatsApp has canceled the archiving of new incoming messages in an archived chat and moved the chat back to the regular chat list. This is no longer the case. Once archived, the chat remains archived until you cancel the archiving yourself.
So that you don’t miss any messages, WhatsApp has probably packed the archive to the top. A small number next to the entry also indicates that there is new news here.
The function had already appeared months ago in the beta version of the messenger and was dubbed “vacation mode” on the web, as it means that less annoying chat notifications pop up and it is more flexible than muting the notifications, which only offers three predefined time periods.
This is how you undo the change
The old WhatsApp archive can be reactivated in the settings, however, when new messages are received for archived chats, the archiving is canceled and the entry “Archived” moves back to the end of the list. To do this, open the WhatsApp settings and select “Chats”. Then tap on “Leave chats in archive” so that the switch next to it turns gray.
