WhatsApp to Introduce Usernames for Enhanced Privacy and Convenience

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA-Meta’s application, Whatsapp, is making a major update to the WhatsApp username. According to the WABetaInfo site, in the future Whatsapp can allow users to message others without having their phone number.

“WhatsApp users will have the opportunity to add another layer of privacy to their account,” wrote WABetaInfo on the blog as quoted from page Daily Mail, Monday (29/5/2023).

It says instead of relying solely on phone numbers to identify contacts, users will be able to choose usernames that are unique and easy to remember.

WABetaInfo spotted a new feature in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.11.15. “While this feature is currently in development and not visible yet, we have a trailer to share,” he said.

He shared screenshots of the development. The screenshot shows the option to add a unique username on the Profile page within the app’s settings. However, further details on how the feature works are still unclear. “Because this feature is still under development, it is too early to understand how usernames work on WhatsApp,” explained WABetaInfo.

Whatsapp allows users to communicate with businesses privately, thus protecting their phone numbers, or perhaps its use will be more widespread, allowing private communication with any user.

“Only time will tell us more about the answers, but we are sure they will revolutionize the way we communicate on WhatsApp in the future.”

While WhatsApp has yet to confirm the news, several excited users have taken to Twitter to express their excitement over the rumours.

Netizens responded to this, one user commented. “Finally!!! It’s time to read something like this and because of that the phone number can be hidden, honestly this is great!!!”

Another netizen commented, “The battle to claim usernames on WhatsApp will start soon!”

The news comes shortly after WhatsApp launched an Edit button that lets you edit messages up to 15 minutes after sending them.

“From correcting simple misspellings to adding extra context to messages, we love giving you more control over your chats,” WhatsApp said.

To use this tool, long press on the sent message and select ‘Edit’ from the menu. Edited messages will have ‘edited’ next to them, so your friends will know about the corrections, even if they can’t see the edit history.

“As with all private messages, media, and calls, your messages and the edits you make are protected by end-to-end encryption,” WhatsApp added.
