WhatsApp’s status as the world’s leading messaging app means it is facing numerous waves of spam targeting millions of users. Whether it’s to get money from you or to obtain personal information, it’s a real problem, one that you may already be experiencing.
What makes WhatsApp strong, but also vulnerable, is how it works: to add someone or chat with them, everything goes through the phone number. So, you just need to get it to harass someone relentlessly. Of course, it is possible to block contacts; but when it is a different person each time, it is impossible to anticipate.
We recently learned that No fewer than 3 million phone numbers linked to a WhatsApp account are currently circulating on the Dark Web. Juicy data for fans of spam and other phishing messages.
WhatsApp is also working on a new Username System, much like all other messaging applications. So, with this method, there is no need to share your phone number, exchanges will be confirmed via this username, with an optional PIN code as a bonus.
Meta seems to be moving in the right direction with the upcoming arrival of usernames on WhatsApp; but in the meantime, How to protect yourself from spam? Indeed, if your number has ended up circulating in the hands of hackers or pseudo-traders constantly adding you to groups or communities to give you a taste of the joys of the stock market, I understand your ordeal.
You’re fed up, but luckily there’s a simple setting in the WhatsApp app to put an end to this charade.
- To do this, go to the app, and tap on settings (the gear logo at the bottom right).
