WhatsApp has significantly expanded its functionality, far beyond the original smartphone app. Users can now easily use the messaging service on desktops and laptops. Despite this, the company recently announced that it would be ending support for Mac users. Instead, they are advised to switch to an alternative solution.
WhatsApp users get new Mac version
WhatsApp will soon end support for its older macOS app based on Electron technology. As of October 27, 2024, users will no longer be able to use or download this version, like Computer Bild reported. For Mac users, this means that they have to switch to the newer version, which has been available since August 2023. This is based on the Catalyst framework and offers better performance and system integration.
Switching to the Catalyst-based app comes with several advantages. Users benefit from a faster, more stable application that also supports almost all functions of the mobile WhatsApp versions. Chats and contacts are retained when switching, so no data is lost, like WABetainfo explained.

Users will be informed of any changes
The older Electron app provided the first access to WhatsApp for macOS since its launch in 2016, but is now being replaced by the new, more modern version. Users of the outdated application are currently being informed via banner that the app will soon be discontinued.
Despite the improvements, the new app is missing some features, such as the community tab and channels. However, these will be added in future updates. WhatsApp is continually working to expand the functionality of the app. Mac users who want to continue using WhatsApp on their desktop must download the new app from the official WhatsApp website. This is the only way you can continue to use the service without restrictions after the end of October.
