The instant messaging application “WhatsApp” is currently testing a new feature called “Channels”, which allows the ability to send messages to a large number of users, according to recent reports.
According to the “WABetaInfo” website, which is interested in “WhatsApp” news, the application began testing the “channels” feature in the beta version of the application on iPhone and Android.
Partial encryption
This feature will allow sending messages to an unlimited number of followers joining the channel while maintaining privacy, meaning that the channel’s followers will not be able to know the phone number of the channel’s owners.
It should be noted that channels will be public and likely for all users to join, so messages in them may not be end-to-end encryption as is always the case in the app.
Only channel owners will have the ability to send messages within channels, while other members will only receive messages, and may give them some options to interact with messages.
Similar to Telegram channels
WhatsApp will also allow channels to be searched for and accessed through their unique identifier.
This feature is very similar to the channels feature in the competing instant messaging application “Telegram”, which has been in it since 2015, and it seems that Meta – the parent company of WhatsApp – will transfer the channels feature in terms of name and work mechanism as it is from “Telegram”.
Updates from channels may be displayed alongside statuses on the same tab, and may be moved to be present in the message box alongside other conversations.
Telegram channels differ from groups, as groups allow the exchange of messages between members within the group, and there is a ceiling for members within one group that does not exceed 1024 members in the group.
Currently, the channel feature in WhatsApp is under trial, and will be released later to the public after the completion of the beta phase.
