WhatsApp: Status gets well-known Instagram function

The status on WhatsApp is a popular way to share current news or moments with friends and close contacts on WhatsApp. The messages disappear within 24 hours and can include photos, videos, text and more. Now the messenger seems to want to expand the feature with a new button, which will remind many of the principle of the social media app Instagram.

WhatsApp: New Like button for status

If you are currently viewing a status message on WhatsApp that you would like to interact with, you can either write a reply or swipe up to send the appropriate emoji from a small selection. Instagram users have long had another function available in the comparable story feature to respond to messages from acquaintances and friends.

All you need to do is click on the “Like” button and a reaction will be sent in the form of a heart emoji. Your contacts will then receive a message telling you that you have liked the story. This is exactly what WhatsApp now seems to want to introduce.

Currently only for Android users

The first beta testers should already be able to access the new button in the Android version of the messenger, as WaBetaInfo communicates. The corresponding screenshots on the page show a small circle with a heart symbol in the middle. This is located at the bottom right next to the button with which you can send a text message in response to the status message

When users react to a status update using the new button, the recipient will receive a notification that someone liked the message on WhatsApp. All users who reacted to the status update will then be listed in the usual viewer list. This makes it easy to keep track of who liked the shared content.
