WhatsApp special function: Samsung’s surprise at the unpacked event

WhatsApp will make it easier to switch from iOS to Android in the future, as you can take your messenger chat history with you. First of all, Samsung Galaxy smartphones are considered with the transfer function.

  • WhatsApp announces transfer function at Samsung Unpacked
  • Initially intended for Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones
  • Other Android phones will follow soon
  • Later possibly also the transfer from Android to iOS

Recently we were able to inform you that the popular WhatsApp messenger is getting an important new feature, which will allow you to move your WhatsApp chat from iOS to Android. Yesterday, this feature was officially presented at Samsung’s Unpacked event, where foldables such as the Galaxy Z Fold 3 were shown.

System change with WhatsApp: Temporary exclusivity for Samsung

After we recently learned that such a transfer of the chat history between the iOS and Android systems should be made possible, we now know: It is initially an OS one-way street, in which only the move from iOS to Android will be permitted.

No problem within Android: Take WhatsApp with you from one smartphone to another

Before you rejoice too early as those willing to switch from iOS to Android: It is of course no coincidence that the Samsung event was chosen for the announcement! It was explained that moving the entire chat history, including photos, videos and voice messages, is initially reserved for those who switch from iOS to a Galaxy smartphone.

The exclusivity also has to do with the fact that the implementation of the transfer tool is quite complex. This is due to the fact that the WhatsApp chats are stored locally and end-to-end encrypted on the devices. So here the developers at WhatsApp and the operating systems and the smartphone manufacturers have to work hand in hand.

First of all, those who want to mothball their old iPhone in favor of a Galaxy smartphone can be happy. The function is to be made available “in the coming weeks”. Other manufacturers will follow later, making it possible to migrate the chat history from iOS to Android. However, there was no further information on availability for other Android models.

Likewise, there was no talk about when the move from Android to iOS will be made possible. I am sure that this feature will also be used when switching from Android to iOS – but I can understand that it was not discussed at a Samsung event.

What do you say Are you thinking of migrating from iOS to Android? Was it perhaps the lack of import function on WhatsApp that was the reason for you to stick with the iPhone?
