That number has increased significantly from six years ago. In 2014 WhatsApp Chief Executive Jan Koum announced that his platform was used to exchange messages as many as 50 billion messages per day.

Six years ago, WhatsApp had less than 500 million users. Now WhatsApp is used by more than 2 billion people worldwide, with India as the largest market by number of users.

At this point, WhatsApp is only competing with itself, because no one has matched that achievement yet.

Apple boss Tim Cook in May revealed that Apple’s messaging services, iMessage and FaceTime were also experiencing record usage. However, Apple has never shared the number of messages exchanged that occurred in it.

While WeChat is reported to have 1 billion users, it also lags behind the volume of its daily messages with WhatsApp.

Unfortunately that’s all Facebook announced in its revenue reports. There were no other announcements including a continuation WhatsApp Pay.
