WhatsApp has updated its terms and conditions. This states, among other things, that the messaging service will share user data with Facebook, the parent company. WhatsApp users are required to agree to the updated terms.

WhatsApp and Facebook start sharing data

The new privacy policy will take effect on February 8, 2021. WhatsApp is currently rolling out an update to notify users. They must accept the updated terms and conditions in order to continue using the messaging service. The more intensive cooperation has already been announced. It is not yet clear whether the new privacy conditions also apply in the Netherlands.
WhatsApp will share more user data with the parent company. Facebook receives, among other things, the telephone number, IP address and telephone details. It also shares how WhatsApp users use their smartphone.
More personal ads
Facebook claims to use the information to “understand” how their products are used. Furthermore, the data serves to improve the quality of the chat app and to provide users with “personal suggestions”. For example, WhatsApp users are served more relevant ads on Facebook platforms such as Instagram.
The updated terms build on an earlier update that was implemented in July 2020. Then WhatsApp users could still choose whether or not to share data with Facebook. That is not possible now. You must agree to the terms and conditions to continue using WhatsApp.

The updated privacy terms will be released at a prominent time. Facebook is currently in conflict with Apple. The latter has been showing for some time how apps deal with the privacy of users. Applications from Facebook do not make a good impression in this.
The latter bit off by placing full-page advertisements in American newspapers. Facebook indicates in this that Apple’s privacy policy is harmful to small businesses.
Facebook was recently taken to court by the consumer association. The consumer organization believes that the company should pay Dutch people for violating their privacy. The verdict is still pending.
