WhatsApp reaches two billion users

The Facebook subsidiary WhatsApp emphasized on Wednesday that the content is protected against unauthorized access by default with complete encryption. WhatsApp boss Will Cathcart told the “Wall Street Journal” that the popularity of WhatsApp among users shows that encrypted communication must be defended.

Most recently, the US government had made a new attempt to demand that Silicon Valley back doors for investigators in encryption systems. The authorities criticize that even with a court order, they cannot access messages from criminals – unlike classic SMS or phone calls, where there are legally prescribed monitoring interfaces. The tech companies counter that a back door for authorities could potentially also be misused by online criminals and would therefore endanger the security of user data.
