As a popular messenger with millions of users worldwide, Whatsapp has gained great importance. Because the app offers more options than sending funny memes back and forth or organizing the next night out with friends in the pub.
The fast exchange of news and data via social networks and messengers such as Whatsapp is also of fundamental importance for political movements. But of course their opponents or even entire regimes know this and try to block such means. For example, Iran suppresses the use of the app. Whatsapp is now taking action against this.
Whatsapp defends itself against censorship
By suppressing connections to well-known, official Whatsapp servers, unpleasant opinions or voices are often to be silenced. But now Whatsapp has revealed which settings can be used to bypass such censorship.
“When connecting directly to Whatsapp isn’t possible, you can stay connected worldwide through a server set up by volunteers and organizations committed to helping others communicate freely,” Whatsapp wrote on Twitter.
Connect to Whatsapp proxy server
“If Whatsapp is blocked in a country, you can use a proxy server to stay connected and chat with friends and family,” the messenger tweeted. There should still be end-to-end encryption for your messages via these proxy servers.
How to connect to a Whatsapp proxy server:
- Via the “three-dot” menu on “Settings” > “Storage and data” > “Proxy”
- Click on “Use proxy” and enter the address of the proxy server under “Set proxy”.
- “Save” – and wait for the green tick, which confirms the successful connection

So that the connection to the proxy server does not fail, Whatsapp indicates that the latest update of the messenger has been installed.
