WhatsApp was hit by a malfunction on Wednesday evening. More than 100,000 Dutch people reported that they had been unable to send messages since 10 p.m. Complaints were also reported outside the Netherlands. The outage in the Netherlands was over within an hour.
WhatsApp also did not work on the computer. Users who tried to open the web version received an error message.
Op Allestoringen.nl the counter stood at 178,000 complaints around 10:30 p.m. Downdetector received more than 37,000 reports from the United States. 177,000 issues were reported in the UK and nearly 15,000 in India.
The outage in the Netherlands was over around 22:50 and WhatsApp was working again on both the telephone and the computer. Twenty minutes later, Whatsapp reported on Twitter that the app is working again.
Spokespersons for WhatsApp parent company Meta were not available for comment on Wednesday evening. A cause for the malfunction is not known.
