WhatsApp now has two billion users NOW

WhatsApp has crossed the border of two billion users on Wednesday, writes the chat service in a blog post. WhatsApp is the second social medium that reaches this milestone. Only Facebook preceded the chat service.

The number of WhatsApp users has increased enormously in recent years. In 2014, WhatsApp still had 500 million users. In that year, Facebook bought the chat app for 19 billion dollars (17.3 billion euros) with the aim of increasing the popularity of WhatsApp. In February 2016 passed WhatsApp the limit of a billion users.

Facebook has tried over the years to increase the revenue of the platform. For example, in November 2019, WhatsApp introduced a feature for small businesses: a ‘mobile store’ to present products with images and prices.

The messaging app was established in 2009 and was available for download from the App Store for the iPhone from November of that year. Shortly thereafter apps for Blackberry, Symbian and Android appeared. In the early days of WhatsApp it was unique that users with different operating systems could chat with each other.

Facebook said it had 2.5 billion users at the end of last year.
