JAKARTA – WhatsApp is excited to announce that individual voice and video calls that have always been private and secure are now available on the WhatsApp Desktop app.
As is known, throughout 2020, WhatsApp experienced a significant increase in the number of users making calls, especially calls of long duration.
In fact, on New Year’s Eve 2021, WhatsApp broke the record for the most calls ever made in a single day, at 1.4 billion voice and video calls.

Currently, there are still a lot of people who are separated from their closest people, and are still trying to adjust to new ways of working. Therefore, management wants conversations on WhatsApp to feel as much face-to-face as possible, regardless of the location or device used.
Making calls on a larger screen will make it easier for users to collaborate with colleagues, see family more clearly, and do other things while chatting.

Even for convenience, desktop dialing has been designed to function seamlessly in both portrait and landscape orientation. Desktop calls are displayed as a separate, resizable window that always appears at the forefront. Thus, the user does not have to search for the video call among the piles of other open windows.
Voice and video calls on WhatsApp are also end-to-end encrypted. Therefore, WhatsApp cannot hear or see user calls, whether made via cellphone or computer.
For now, WhatsApp starts with individual calls first to ensure the team can provide a reliable and high-quality experience. In the future, WhatsApp will develop this feature to include group voice and video calls.
