WhatsApp has been causing a stir since the beginning of the year at the latest. In the first week of January, the Facebook subsidiary announced that it would start in early February share more data with the parent company. At the time, it was said that anyone who does not agree can no longer use the messenger. The developers received great criticism from the community for this, so that some users switched to already better alternatives. In the case of Telegram, they went a step further and even introduced a way to import chats from WhatsApp into their own messenger.
WhatsApp wants to keep users and is breaking new ground
With the big migration in mind, they quickly spoke up and revised the decision for the time being. In addition, the data processing was corrected so that the new guidelines would not have come into force in the EU anyway due to the legal situation.
The more intensive data exchange with Facebook is therefore off the table for now and could nonetheless become an issue again. This assumption leads to a step that we have only seen from Telegram or Snapchat so far. Like the website The Verge reported, WhatsApp launched a new campaign over the weekend to ensure more transparency.
In the status reports it was stated that they would like to provide information on functions and updates here from now on. Data protection was therefore addressed in the first reports. It was reaffirmed that it is committed to data protection and that this is nothing new. In addition, it was stated that private conversations cannot be read or overheard, since the chats are encrypted from end-to-end.
It remains to be seen how WhatsApp will continue to use the feature. However, the first reports make it clear that they want to prevent migration and that more transparency is to be ensured in the future. What do you think?
