WhatsApp has improved its privacy settings. The operators of the smartphone messenger are open about this Twitter informed. Interested parties can now choose even more precisely who can access profile information and which WhatsApp users this data will remain hidden. The innovation applies to various options.

in menu Einstellungen – Account – Datenschutz WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business, users can specify who has access to profile pictures and information from the contacts stored in the address book, as well as the time at which the respective user last opened the Messenger app. A fourth option is now available for these three functions.

This option is new

Previously, the details could be disclosed either to all WhatsApp users, to their own contacts, or to no one. Now there is another possibility with “My contacts, except…”. This means that individuals saved in the address book can be excluded from accessing the information on the WhatsApp profile and the time of the last access to the messenger.

The function is not entirely new. It was previously possible to exclude individual contacts from WhatsApp status. Now the feature has been extended to other data stored in Messenger. The new feature is activated on the server side. The new setting options have already arrived for the WhatsApp and WhatsApp Business accounts used in our editorial office on the Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.

One feature is still missing

It would now be desirable to be able to share the details only with selected contacts. This option already exists for the WhatsApp status, but not for the profile picture and information or for specifying the last online time. It is not yet known whether WhatsApp will provide this function at a later date.

As reported, WhatsApp has also announced new features for group calls. This makes it possible, for example, to mute individual group members and to send messages during a phone call. Also in the works is an extension of the multi-device function, which should in future make it possible to use WhatsApp Messenger on a second smartphone with the same phone number.
