WhatsApp, new greeting message scam: how to defend yourself

A scam that does great damage to those who use WhatsApp has returned. It starts with a fake message followed by a link through which they steal everything from you.

Like every year, cybercriminals are looking for new ways to exploit user vulnerabilities on WhatsApp and try to scam them in order to steal sensitive data from them. On the other hand, for a hacker, a messaging platform that hosts over a billion people within it, it’s the perfect place to lure new victims.

The most recent danger reported in recent weeks, to which users are therefore required to pay particular attention, is that of a fake greeting message. A system that had actually already been used in the past. They are sent around the holidays and works like a real chain of Sant’Antonio, in where the message is sent endlessly until someone falls for it.

This is usually a very simple text message, which often reads:

“Hi, it’s me … happy birthday .. look at this …”

then some links are attached to click on.

Of course this is a computer fraud, and in the moment the poor unfortunate click on the attachment, his computer becomes infected with the Trojan contained in the link, thus giving the hacker access to his device.

It is therefore good that users always distrust this type of message, which are often not even written in correct Italian, and never click on links, without having the absolute certainty that they are safe or sent by a trusted person.
