WhatsApp: Messenger is planning a new widget to replace the phone app

WHATSAPP

SMS and MMS have already fallen victim to WhatsApp. Messenger is now planning an innovation that could also make WhatsApp the standard app for phone calls.

With the advent of WhatsApp and the like, the number of text messages sent has decreased rapidly. The multimedia offshoot MMS has not played any role since then and has now been discontinued by Vodafone, for example. Messenger could soon gain more weight in terms of phone calls.

WhatsApp has allowed VoIP calls for years – provided you have a data connection. However, the service was very choppy. So you always have to first find a contact in the app, open the chat and click the receiver to start a call. WhatsApp is now planning a shortcut for this.

Like the fan blog WABetaInfo reported the Messenger is working on a feature called “Calling Shortcut”. Thanks to this, you should be able to create a widget on the start screen of your mobile phone, which you can use to start a WhatsApp call with a favorite contact.

Also interesting…

So far, WhatsApp only allows you to create widgets that lead you directly into a chat with a selected contact. However, it is still unclear when the innovation will be rolled out. The feature is currently still under development.
