WhatsApp makes it much easier to ghost people with a ‘sneaky’ group chat update

Soon you’ll be able to leave WhatsApp group chats and avoid awkward conversations, thanks to an upcoming update to the popular encrypted messaging app.

If you’re currently leaving a group chat, everyone in the chat will be notified, which can often lead to awkward conversations.

However, a new beta update will allow users to leave group chats without notifying all participants. Instead, only the group chat administrator will be notified.

This means you can now quietly slip out of any group.

It’s not yet known when the feature will be rolled out to all WhatsApp users, but it looks like it could be included in the app’s massive “Communities” update.

WhatsApp experts from WABetaInfo said: “When you leave a group, WhatsApp normally adds a system message to the chat informing all participants that you have left the group: this information will only be visible to group administrators in the future.

“Group admins should always be made aware of what is happening in their groups, so it is necessary to show them who has left a group.”

They added that the feature is currently under development in the WhatsApp Desktop beta and should be rolled out to all users in a future update.

WhatsApp is getting one of its biggest updates yet as parent company Meta (formerly Facebook) introduces its WhatsApp community feature.

This makes it possible for people to combine related group chats under one banner in closed social networks.

For example, schools could combine all of their group chats into one community, along with a parent’s WhatsApp chat to deliver important announcements to everyone.

Or, in a work environment, an office can host three different WhatsApp group chats for different staff teams, all managed by one common administrator.
