The popular WhatsApp application, owned by Meta, has announced the launch of a new “Security Center”, which is a specialized page on the application’s official website, with the aim of educating users about security features within the application, to protect them from fraud and phishing.

This step from WhatsApp comes after reports emerged that detected an increase in the number of annoying calls that users receive through the application through unknown international numbers.

Meta said it had created a “new online resource” to raise awareness and provide information about the technology it uses to ensure the safety of users, according to CNBC.

Security advantages

The “Security Center” page highlights the security features in the WhatsApp application, which include default privacy, which prevents anyone from viewing messages, in reference to the full encryption feature that WhatsApp secures messages, in addition to the automatic detection system for fraudulent accounts that send spam messages, as well as a feature of proactive protection alerts that protects your account when it is exposed to hacking attempts.

The “Security Center” page also provides an explanation of some of the features and options that “add additional layers of protection” that make it difficult for hackers and fraudsters to hack the WhatsApp account or access user data, such as the two-step verification feature, reporting suspicious messages, blocking annoying contacts, and others.

The page also stressed the need to avoid using unofficial WhatsApp applications, which are widespread among Android users, and the company describes them as “fake applications for WhatsApp developed by third parties,” noting that the company does not support these applications because it is not sure of its security practices.

Two billion users

In addition to the above, the “Security Center” page on the official WhatsApp website displays some other matters such as frequently asked questions from users with links to answer them from within the Help Center section, protection and privacy updates that it provides, and others.

WhatsApp provides the “Security Center” page in many languages, including Arabic.

It is worth noting that the WhatsApp application is the most popular instant messaging application in the world, with more than two billion active users around the world.
