Jakarta, CNNIndonesia —
Instant messaging application WhatsApp launched a new feature that allows users to record and send video directly within the app.
The instant video messages can be up to 60 seconds long, and are also protected with an encryption service end-to-end from this app.
“We thought this would be a fun way to share moments with all the emotions that come out of the video, whether it’s wishing someone a happy birthday, laughing at a joke, or bringing happy news,” the company said in a blog post, citing CNNSunday (30/7).
This new feature will be similar to sending a voice message on the platform and there will also be a way to record video online hands-free.
The company says this new update has already started rolling out in the app and will be available to everyone in the next few weeks.
Earlier this year, WhatsApp rolled out an update that would allow users to edit messages within the app (as long as they are within 15 minutes of sending).
The latest product update for WhatsApp comes after a better-than-expected earnings report from Meta. The company said Wednesday that revenue jumped 11% year over year to $32 billion for the quarter ending in June, as CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “year of efficiency” appeared to pay off for the social media giant.
After a battered 2022, Meta stock jumped more than 150 percent in 2023.
Prior to this, WhatsApp has also launched a variety of new features, one of which is a feature that allows users to transfer chats by simply scanning the QR Code.
Transfer chat feature that bypasses data in the cloud by simply scanning the QR code displayed on the user’s old phone with the user’s new phone. This new feature has the potential to make the chat transfer process quicker and easier than before.
Not only that, WhatsApp is also reportedly testing a feature to hide users’ cellphone numbers from strangers in the Community column. This latest feature is said to be present in the latest WhatsApp Beta update, for both Android and iOS devices.
This feature will be available for WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.23.14.19 and WhatsApp beta for iOS version 23.14.0.70.
This feature is coming to a limited number of users, and will roll out to a wider audience in the coming weeks.
In the past few months, WhatsApp has quietly started testing a new feature for communities that will add an extra layer of privacy to a user’s account when joining certain communities.
