Whatsapp launches messages with expiration date

Whatsapp is rolling out a new feature this month: users will be able to send messages that disappear automatically after 7 days. The company reports this in a blog post.

Currently, the chat messages all remain on the smartphone by default. ‘It’s nice to have memories from friends and family. But most of the messages we send don’t need to be kept forever, ”the company says. More than 2 billion people use the app worldwide.

Whatsapp users will be able to set messages to be automatically deleted seven days after sending. In group conversations, only the administrators will be able to enable the feature. The 7-day timeframe provides peace of mind because conversations are not permanent, but is long enough not to forget what the chat was about.

Whatsapp itself points out that the system is not watertight. Conversation partners can take screenshots or copies to save text even longer. Photos will also disappear from the call after seven days, but will continue to swing on the smartphone if the ‘automatic download’ feature is not turned off.
