WhatsApp Launches “Conversation Protection” Feature to Hide Chats with a Password

WhatsApp launched on the 15th a feature that allows you to hide conversations and protect chats with a password.

Called “Conversation Protection”, the functionality began to be released and should reach all users of the platform in the coming days, according to the company.

How it works

By adding an extra layer of protection to the chat, it is hidden in a “secret folder”. Until then, having this type of protection required the use of unofficial WhatsApp apps.

With the novelty, if someone picks up your unlocked phone and opens WhatsApp, they won’t be able to find the exchange of messages you’ve chosen to hide.

This is because access to protected conversations will only be done through a password chosen by the owner of the device (your device password or biometrics, such as fingerprint.

In case the protected chat person sends you a message, the sender name and content will be hidden even on your smartphone screen. Uploaded files will also be protected so that they are not visible in the cell phone gallery.

How to enable Chat Protection

You need to tap on a person or group name and select the block option.

To reveal conversations, you need to slowly drag down your inbox, select the “Blocked chats” option, and enter your phone password or biometrics.

Zuckerberg’s company says that in the coming months more functions will be released, such as creating personalized passwords for blocked conversations – in the recent announcement, there is only the option to use the phone password or biometrics.

Other security features

Gradually, WhatsApp is increasing privacy options for users.

Until then, it was only possible to block the opening of the app with biometrics. To activate it is necessary:

  • Go to Settings > Privacy
  • Choose Lock by fingerprint or facial recognition;
  • From that, to open the app, it is necessary to use some kind of biometrics.

Other functions already present in WhatsApp, still in Settings > Privacy, is to remove the “Last seen and online” and hide the “Profile photo”.
