WhatsApp is testing new feature that allows users to cut video before sharing with others

WhatsApp is testing a new feature that would allow users to turn off videos before sending them. The development, dubbed Mute videos, was spotted on WhatsApp for Android Beta v2.21.3.13. Notably, WhatsApp’s sister platform owned by Facebook, Instagram, already offers the feature allowing users to share videos via direct messages (DMs) with the audio muted. WhatsApp can extend the functionality to the beta for iOS first, before mass deployment.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature is available to beta users of WhatsApp for Android. Users can turn off videos by pressing the volume button, available in the section where users usually edit video. The other options remain the same with an emote option, a text option, and an edit option. While not a substantial upgrade, it’s nice to have more options when sending files to other users. The Mute Video feature first appeared in the WhatsApp for Android Beta v2.20.207.2 app, but it was only under development at that time. More details on its deployment are expected soon.

Meanwhile, the messaging platform has been in the throes of some controversy since it announced new terms and conditions for the platform. Under the new rules, Facebook will collect and share metadata (course location, profile name, etc.) to deliver more personalized ads on other platforms owned by Facebook. However, WhatsApp guarantees that no private chats or conversations are accessible by the company. Privacy advocates, including in India, have criticized the Facebook-owned platform for providing only a one-sided choice of either taking or leaving the offer. The Indian government has also contacted Facebook asking them to change the new rules. On the other hand, the Delhi High said the new WhatsApp rules are voluntary and users can say no if they disagree with them upon hearing a petition last month. WhatsApp’s new privacy policy was supposed to go into effect in February, but was postponed until May.
